Surely, All duty must be predicated on purpose. Without purpose there is no
need to ‘rectify’ behaviours. I cannot think of any purpose that is not
temporal in nature, abstract and fleeting. Since all purpose is temporal in
nature, then purpose has only an imagined validity. So then duty is an
imagined construction. Mr Ross is trying to avoid the nihilistic abyss by
distracting himself with thoughts of duty, but avoiding its fundamental
meaninglessness. Mr Ross is a Kirkegaardian aesthete.
