I dont know about you, but I always have this list on my back. Well, not literally, of course but it always seems that there is a list of things that I want to do, but can never get around to doing.

It changes with time, given my wide ranging interests, but the list itself never goes away. Currently, for instance the list goes something like this: learn horseback riding, learn HTML, learn the guitar, finish reading Ulysses. As you can see, I have varied interests, but thats not the point.

The point is, there were times in my life when the list would get large, bulky and unwieldy. I would find ways and means to add new things on to the list, but couldnt find the time to strike items off the list. And this went on until I figured out a way out of this riddle.

One Hour Per Day For One Month

Heres how I approach the list nowadays. I take one item on the list, and try and spend at least one hour on it every single day, for a month. I keep at it, trying to get at least some level of familiarity with the subject by reading about it, talking to people about it, or actually doing it.

After a month, I have a pretty good idea about whether I want to pursue the subject at a deeper level. If I do, I go ahead and make time for it. On the other hand, if I have not managed to develop a deeper interest, thats fine too. I have more than a passing knowledge on a subject, and that never hurt anybody.

And when a new month rolls along, I have a new topic to start work upon. I have been using this system for about a year now, and it works like a charm. My topic for this month, for example, is learning to play the guitar and while Eric Clapton may not be knocking on my door just yet, I certainly do like it enough to keep at it.

Have a go at it yourself, if you like I think youll find this a fairly useful way to learn something new. And while were on the subject of learning the guitar, I wish my neighbors would practice tolerance for an hour every day!
